He also mediated in land disputes and took money from involved parties under the pretext of settling them, according to police.

Srinivas had started collecting money from gullible people by claiming that he was appointed as the organising secretary of the Congress for Malkajgiri area in the city and wold settle land disputes using his “political clout”.

“After collecting money, Srinivas used to stop responding. He used to issue dud cheques and fake promissory notes to people and avoided refunding,” a police official said.

Chaitanyapuri police station Inspector G Guru Raghvendra said they had also received complaints against Srinivas regarding cheque bounce.

“We will verify if he actually was a local Congress leader,” the officer said responding to a query. Further probe is on.
