Indore/ Dhar: Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar was arrested on Wednesday when she was on her way to Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh to meet the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) oustees, police said.

According to information, police stopped Patkar at Pithampur sector no 1 police station as soon as she entered Dhar district at around 6:10 pm and informed her that she could not proceed to Dhar, but as she refused to relent, she was placed under arrest at the border of Indore and Dhar districts, and subsequently, taken to Dhar.

Additional director general of police (ADGP), Indore range Ajay Sharma confirmed her arrest. Sharma said, “We have arrested her as she insisted on going back to meet the oustees. We have told her that it is not possible to allow her to go to Dhar as section 144, CrPc has been imposed in the area.”

“We will ask her to furnish a bond stating that section 144 will not be violated. If she furnishes it, we will release her,” ADGP said. Subsequently, Patkar was produced before a sub-divisional judicial magistrate in Dhar who sent her to jail. Earlier in the day, Patkar was discharged from a private hospital in Indore after her condition improved.

She said that she will continue ‘anshan’ as well as protest against the act of state government to remove agitators and oustees forcefully from the place of agitation.

“Medicines were administered through drips to the fasting agitators in various hospitals but none of us has eaten food so far. We demand the oustees be allowed to stay in their original dwellings till proper arrangements are made for their rehabilitation,” Patkar, who came out of the hospital on a wheelchair, said.

“I was illegally detained by the police and they have converted the hospital into a jail for me as they did not allow people to meet me even during visiting hours. I was not allowed to watch news channels or read newspapers nor use mobile phone in the hospital,” she said.
Patkar expressed her displeasure over the orders of supreme court and said that the judicial body should check ground reality as to what thousands of people are facing in Chikhalda, Nisarpur and other places.

“Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan didn’t even try to meet the affected people and there is no change in their conditions yet. We will continue our fight till the people affected by Sardar Sarovar Project are rehabilitated and resettled properly,” she added.

The NBA chief also cautioned Chief Minister for not worsening things as now the matter of rehabilitation and resettlement has taken a turn for the worse. She said that the government has been playing with fake figures and big statements of the Chief Minister but nothing has come to ground reality.
