Berhampur (Odisha): At least two persons were killed in a blast at a house packed with explosive substances at Nalabanta area under Aska police station in Ganjam district today, the police said. While Ashok Pradhan (45) died on the way to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here, Pintu Khatua (30) succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. They both belonging to Nalabanta area, famous for manufacture of fireworks.

The blast was so powerful that the building was broken and neighbouring houses partially damaged. Huge quantities of explosives were packed in the house for manufacturing of fire crackers by Ashok. When a person informed them about smoke emitting from the locked house in the morning, Ashok and Pintu rushed and entered into the house.

“We heard a loud sound at about 7 AM. After some minutes, the house caught fire. We pulled out the two out from there,” said Sushant Pradhan, one of the local residents. Fire tenders from Aska took around two hours to control the blazes.

Ashok has license for trading of of firecrackers but it has to be verified whether he has license for manufacturing, police said. It was the second such incident in the district in three days. A college girl and five-year old child were charred to death in an explosion in an illegally run fire cracker manufacturing unit at Dihapadhal under Bhanjangar police station on Wednesday.

Police launched a crackdown on the illegally run firecracker units in the village and seized huge quantities of explosive materials and equipment used for manufacturing of firecrackers.
