Mumbai : Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Saturday the nation is behind its armed forces, even if it was not in uniform.
“The entire nation may not be in uniform, but we stand firmly behind you (armed forces) and are proud of you”, said the prime minister after commissioning the INS Kolkata, the country’s largest indigenous missile destroyer.
“When I speak about the navy from Maharashtra, it is all but natural to remember Chhatrapati Shivaji”, adding “Chhatrapati Shivaji understood well the significance of securing the seas for increasing trade.”
Defence Minister Arun Jaitley had earlier said, “Today is a historic day for the country and the navy.”
The new warship has been fitted with modern missiles, radar and communication systems as well as long range missile BrahMos and surface-to-air missile Akash.
Vice Admiral Ashok Subedar told ANI, “The missile, radar and communication systems have been fitted so that it can play its role well.
The ship will be fitted with the long range missile BrahMos and surface-to-air missiles Akash, the trials of which will take place in September or October, in collaboration with the DRDO.”
