New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday blamed the Delhi Police for rising cases of rapes in the city, saying the police is highly compromised.
“If crimes are not happening then it is not because of Delhi police. It is inspite of the presence Delhi police,” he told media here today.
“The way in which Delhi Police works was highlighted in three incidents yesterday. One is the gang rape of Danish woman. In other two, Somnath Bharti and Rakhi Birla had argued with the police as they were not acting against the criminals. These incidents show that Delhi’s security is at risk,” he added.
Kejriwal called on the Delhi Police, and said if accountability is not set, then the incidents of rape will not come to an end.
“We are warning the Delhi Police. If proper action is not taken, then the government will not sit quiet nor will the public. The entire public will start interfering in their work if they don’t start acting,” he added.
A 51-year-old Danish woman has alleged that she was gang raped and robbed by a group of men near the New Delhi Railway Station late last night.
The victim told the police that she was gang raped and beaten after being robbed by eight men, after she lost track of the hotel she was staying in.
Though the victim flew to Copenhagen early this morning, she has alleged that she was attacked as she was seeking directions to her hotel. The suspects are said to have then taken her to an undisclosed location and raped her.
The men also took her money and valuables which she was carrying. The victim, however, managed to get to her hotel, and informed the police about the incident.
Police have arrested four men in connection with the case. Police said the victim had refused to undergo a medical examination before flying off to Denmark.
