Ahmedabad: A deep depression over the Arabian sea today crossed coastal region of Gujarat at Diu, which is likely to bring heavy rainfall with strong winds across the state. “Yesterday’s depression over the Arabian sea has turned into deep depression and crossed the coastal town of Diu, and surrounding areas of Saurashtra region of Gujarat today,” Deputy Director of Ahmedabad Meteorological centre, Manorama Mohanty said.

Due to the crossing over of deep depression over the land border, the coastal areas surrounding Diu are receiving rainfall, Mohanty said. “It will bring heavy to heavy rainfall with strong winds across the state for upcoming 48 hours,” she said. Met department, in connection with the forecast for June 23 and 24 on its website, said that moderate to rather heavy rain or thundershowers would occur at most places in the districts of south Gujarat region, Saurashtra-Kutch and in Diu, Daman, Dadra Nagar Haveli and at many places in the districts of North Gujarat region as well.

“Sea will be very rough with waves from southeasterly to southernly direction. Fishermen are advised not to venture into open sea during the same period,” a warning on the Met department’s website said. “Winds will be 45 to 55 kmph from easterly to south- easterly direction. Wind speed in squall may temporarily reach 65 kmph,” it said.

In Diu, tourists were also advised not to go near the beaches. The Monsoon has not covered the entire state and just entered south-Gujarat region so far.
