New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party today named former Army chief V.K. Singh as its candidate from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, in its fifth list of Lok Sabha candidates.

Party President Rajnath Singh is the sitting Lok Sabha member from Ghaziabad.

The Congress party has fielded actor Raj Babbar from Ghaziabad for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Party workers from Ghaziabad had assembled today outside the BJP headquarters to oppose the selection criteria adopted for the constituency. V.K. Singh, who worked as an associate of social activist Anna Hazare after retiring from the service, was formally inducted into the BJP on Mar 1.

While in service, Singh had grabbed the headlines when he locked horns with the Centre over a dispute regarding his age and even dragged the government to the Supreme Court. He, however, had to withdraw his plea as the apex court refused to entertain it.

The BJP also named Shibun Lyngdoh as its candidate from Shillong in Meghalaya.
