There is always something about Indian vegetarian cuisine that warms the cockles of everyone’s hearts, whether you are a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian. A delicious and mouthwatering thali has never done anyone any harm, especially all the vegetarians in the city who look forward to having great food that will fill up their tummy.

Thalis are the kings of vegetarian cuisine that have originated in India years ago where you get servings of various starters, mains and deserts in one big plate. Since I am a vegetarian who simply cannot resist the allure of a great thali, here are some of the best thali joints across Mumbai that are sure to captivate your senses as well.


Status Veg Restaurant, Nariman Point

A 15 to 20 minute walk from Churchgate station will lead you to this famous veg restaurant frequented by friends, families and colleagues alike! While there are no advance bookings done, this restaurant takes people in on first come first serve basis which does have people sitting out for some time during rush hours or weekends. Believe us when we say, it is totally worth the wait and much more. They serve up every portion of the limited or unlimited thali piping hot, right from the starters to the main course to the desserts. So head to Status for a great time and a lovely adventure into the world of Gujarati thalis.

Shagun Restaurant, Mumbai Central

Just a two minute walk from the Mumbai Central station will bring you to this charming little veg restaurant thatlead 2 serves up various dishes and cuisines. Best known for their limited or unlimited Gujarati thali ever since they were established more than a decade back, Shagun is also known for its Punjabi dishes. They have a non-AC section and an AC section for customers to pick and choose from. Their limited Gujarati thali is enough to fill your belly with great food as you have the option to pick between puris or phulkas and Gujarati dal rice or khichdi kadhi. Either way, you are guaranteed to have a great time in a good spending budget.

Golden Star Thali, Charni Road

Located in the heart of South Mumbai, this veteran thali joint has been a part of the busy city for years. Home to some of the best Gujarati and Rajasthani cuisine, Golden Star has had a loyal patronage of customers who always go there for either business meetings or family get-togethers. They serve up their unlimited thalis and fill up all the bowls with three varieties of farsans, four types of vegetables, four types of rotis, types of rice, salads and more. They also have packed lunch or dinner boxes at INR 155/- that you can take home. Despite being on the pricier end, this place is sure to get you hooked.

Maharaja Bhog Premium Veg Thali

This aromatic and stunning Gujarati and Rajasthani thali restaurant is located in the hearts of Goregaon East and Malad West at the Oberoi Mall and Inorbit Mall respectively. Most people who go there with their friends or families lead 3come out with nothing but rave reviews of the food and ambiance. Their stunning unlimited thali consists of one steamed and one fried farsan, four different types of vegetables, two types of Indian dals, two types of kadhis, two types of sweets, three types of pickles, three different types of Indian bread and two types of rice.

Thackers, Chowpatty

Located in arguably one of the best areas in South Mumbai, Thackers faces the beautiful Arabian Sea, right beside the stunning sands of the Chowpatty beach. A veggie delight for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike, this place serves up different cuisines, but is best known for its delicious Gujarati thali. They serve up the steaming hot and lavish Gujarati thali for you to dig into that contains nothing but authentic flavour. Remember to go along with your family or friends as it is a great place for get-togethers and reunions.

Rajdhani Thali Restaurant

Head to Majiwada, Bandra or Ghatkopar to get acquainted with the bold flavours of Rajasthani cuisine served up in gracious quantities by Rajdhani. Just as you enter the restaurant and take your seats, the servers will come up to your table and start serving up some delicious piping hot food that is guaranteed to keep you going back for more.  They are not just known for their eat-in unlimited Rajasthani thalis, but also for their meal boxes of various price ranges that you can take home.
