In the last week there have been more than a dozen incidents of fire reported from across the globe. And the number of lives that have been lost to fire should set the alarm bells ringing. The issue of fire safety is a very serious issue and must not be treated lightly. In the recent few years Mumbai has blossomed, there has been a humongous rise in the number of pubs and restaurants and also infrastructure.
Fire is a tragedy that can happen anywhere and the biggest challenge in such a scenario is the evacuation process. And for this reason the fire department officials visit the premises and issue an no-objection certificate (NOC) to places which meet the fire safety guidelines. However, nothing guarantees that there won’t be any fire incidents even if all the fire safety guidelines are followed to the T.
In the wake of recent incidents here are a list of things that you can do in case of a fire.
Things to do in case of fire
Immediately pull the nearest fire alarm pull station as you exit the building.
When evacuating the building, be sure to feel doors for heat before opening them to be sure there is no fire danger on the other side.
Remember to crawl
If there is smoke in the air, stay low to the ground, especially your head, to reduce inhalation exposure. Keep on hand on the wall to prevent disorientation and crawl to the nearest exit.
Informing fire officials
Once away and clear from danger, call and report the incident to the fire officials
Remain in your room
Do remain in your room if you are unable to exit the building safely because of smoke or fire. Keep the door closed and await assistance from the fire department.
Keep the smoke out
If smoke is entering under or around the door, stuff damp sheets or blankets in the spaces to help keep smoke out. Use windows to notify people that you are stuck in your room.
Close the door behind you
Do close the doors behind you if it is safe to leave your room.
Look out for neighbours
Look out for your neighbors and note if they have or not have been evacuated and like wise inform the authorities about it. It might help save a life.
Do not assume that the fire alarm maybe a small thing, maybe a cloth burning or a cigarette smoke. In cases of fire any small incident can become big and can be harmful to your life.
