To all the cinema lovers in Mumbai, it’s time of the year again when we celebrate films. The festival is conducted under the aegis of the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image (MAMI). One of the biggest film festivals Jio MAMI Film Festival is back with its 19th edition with some really interesting line-ups of films. The festival will be held from October 12 to 18 and will showcase 220 films from 49 countries and in 51 languages. The line-up includes films from remotest corners of India as well as from countries across the globe. The festival will kick start with Anurag Kashyap’s boxing drama Mukkabaaz. A glimpse at the line-ups and we found few gems that you could definitely look out for.

A Gentle Creature

One day a woman who lives on the outskirts of a village in Russia receives a parcel which she had sent to her incarcerated husband. The parcel is marked ‘return to sender’. The woman is confused and shocked with the message and decides to travel to prison to meet her husband and ask for an explanation. Thus begins protagonist’s journey where she braves violence against the prison where the forces of social evil are constantly at work.



I am not a witch

The satirical ‘I am not a witch’ is about an 8-year-old girl Shula, who is accused of witchcraft. After a short trial, she is found guilty and is exiled to a witch camp in Zambia in the middle of a dessert. At the camp, she is tied with a ribbon and is threatened that if she cuts the ribbon she will be transformed into a goat. As she sails through her new life with her fellow witches and a government official who espouses her, she is made to think whether she should accept her fate or seek freedom by risking her life.

On the beach at night alone

The story is about Younghee, who is stressed by a relationship with a married man in Korea. He commits that he will join her but she doesn’t trust him. She eats at an acquaintance’s home and goes to a sea and wonders, “Is he missing me now like I miss him?’ She meets few old friends, where they drink but she decides to give it a skip. Left alone she goes to the beach and this is where things inside her heart manifest themselves. She thinks ‘How important is love in one’s life?’


24 Frames

The film is an experimental project by director Abbas Kiarostami. It is a series of 24 short four-and-a-half minutes films inspired by still images, including paintings and photographs. Each film unfolds inside a single static frame.


In the Shadows

The psychological drama features Manoj Bajpayee in lead role. He plays a lonely man named Khuddoos who is trapped within the city walls and his own mind. He obsessively watches people through a hidden camera. One day, he hears a boy is being beaten up, the sound piercing through the walls of his house. He decides to search the boy and in the process he loses his grip on reality, eventually breaking the wall and revealing a shocking truth.


Brigsby Bear

For over 25 years, James has been living with his protective parents in their home. He is suddenly tossed into a new life and as his world expands, the shocking revelation to him is that he is the only person who has ever watched his favourite television show ‘Brigsby Bear Adventures’. And soon he begins to consider Brigsby’s lessons are the only thing that makes sense in this new world. James decides to make a movie to end Brigsby’s story and re-begin his own.


The Florida Project

The story is about a six-year-old girl Moonee who along with her mother Halley live week to week at ‘The Magic Castle’, a budget motel. Despite the harsh surroundings around her Moonee and her friends make each day a celebration of life with endless adventures and mischief. Her adventures are supported by her mother who is forced to explore increasingly dangerous possibilities in order to provide for her daughter.

Claire’s Camera

Set at the Cannes Film Festival, the film ‘Claire’s Camera’ is a story about Man-hee, a manager at a film sales company, and Claire, a teacher from Paris. Man-hee is fired by her boss for dishonesty. Claire walks around La Croisette clicking pictures with a Polaroid camera. The two girls form a friendship after Man-hee approaches Claire for a photo. Claire is a kind of person who has an ability to slowly look at things and to transform objects.


Sexy Durga

Durga (a North Indian migrant) and Kabeer (a Keralite youth) are running away and at midnight are waiting for transport to the nearest railway station. The couple is offered assistance by two small-time gangsters. Through the rest of the night, she encounters a cross-section of the society. Parallel to Durga’s journey, an event intercuts the film, in a Kerala village devotees, are seen performing ‘Garudam Thookkam’, a ritual art form submitted as a reward for the problems solved in the abode of Goddess Kali.


The Party
