Depression has become the buzzword of our lifestyle, all thanks to our hectic and busy working patterns which throngs and heaps up our lives with stress and anxiety. How depression has increased its deadly spectrum is no longer unknown, people of all age groups suffer from depression and stress. The biggest misconception about depression is that it’s sometimes correlated with severe mental illness. Hence, people who deal with it find hard to express his or her situation which eventually leads to aloofness and dejection. When depression creeps into common man’s life, it’s just a result of our imbalanced lifestyle.

But when depression hovers on a celebrity or a well-known person it becomes a Page 3 story. The reality behind star studded lifestyle of celebrities gets vanished in limelight, their hardships, struggle and their infinite rat race to rule industry impacts badly their personal life and health. Opening up about depression and sharing more with people and near ones is the prime step of combating the situation. Here are some enlisted celebrities who went rehab, spoke up about their darkest phase and cleared the air on topsy-turvy state of their life…

Demi Lovato

After a spat with a dancer on Jonas Brothers World Tour, Demi suffered anorexia, bulimia and bipolar disorder which lead her to depression. In 2010, she went to treatment facility for dealing with emotional and physical issues. After leaving the centre and getting her life back under control, Lovato said in an interview when asked about her dark phase, “Looking back it makes sense. There were times when I was so manic, I was writing seven songs in one night and I’d be up until 5.30 in the morning”.

Selena Gomez

‘Kill em with kindness’ singer and former Disney child actress is now considered as one of the successful female artist of Hollywood and she is now making headlines for bonding with ‘Starboy’ singer The Weeknd. Selena cancelled her world tour because she was facing depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Gomez immediately consulted herself for counselling and checked into rehab for treating mental health problems.

Catherine Zeta-Jones

 Actress Catherine Zeta Jones was once suffering with bipolar disorder II, which results into severe depression. In 2011, she diagnosed herself in self-care centre for dealing with her mental and emotional state. Dateline NBC host Jane Pauley praised Zeta-Jones’ decision to go public, saying that “she has made the world a safer place for people who have the diagnosis.”

Gwyneth Paltrow


Singer-turned-actress got married to her estranged husband Coldplay’s lead singer Chris Martin in 2003.The couple have two children together however, Paltrow after welcoming her son Moses suffered from postpartum depression “I felt like a zombie,” Paltrow told Good Housekeeping in February 2011. “I couldn’t access my emotions.” Still, she didn’t suspect postpartum depression until her husband brought up the idea of checking into rehab. “I thought postpartum depression meant you were sobbing every single day and incapable of looking after a child,” she said. “But there are different shades and depths of it.”

Kristen Bell

In an interview on YouTube’s Off-Camera Show, Kristen Bell told Sam Jones she takes medication for depression and anxiety. She also noted that her mother, grandmother, and other family members have had similar issues. In May 2016, Bell revealed that she has struggled with and received help for depression and anxiety. She said, “It’s important for me to be candid about this so people in a similar situation can realize that they are not worthless and that they do have something to offer.”

Dwayne Johnson

American actor and former WWE wrestler fondly known by his ring name ‘The Rock’ experienced depression in his 20s. He played football for Canadian team but after playing for two months he stopped. Johnson called this time of his life — during which he also lived in his parents’ basement — “a real low point.” Johnson, shared a hopeful message to inspire others who may be dealing with depression. He shared his experience by saying “You’re not the first to go through it; you’re not going to be the last to go through it… I wish I had someone at that time who could just pull me aside and [say], ‘Hey, it’s gonna be okay. It’ll be okay.’ So I wish I knew that.”

Jon Hamm

 Mad Men actor Jon Hamm suffered from chronic depression after his father’s unfortunate death when he was just 20. He followed therapies and doses of anti-depressants which helped him to get down from depression. “You can change your brain chemistry enough to think: I want to get up in the morning; I don’t want to sleep until four in the afternoon,” Hamm told UK magazine The Observer in September, 2010, while speaking about medication and treating depression.

Kid Cudi

Actor-rapper Kid Cudi revealed about his struggles with depression followed with suicide thoughts. After a failed relationship he got addicted to anti-depressant pills which had been prescribed to curb his ‘emotional breakdown’. In 2014, Kid Cudi revealed in an interview “I’ve dealt with suicide for the past five years. There wasn’t a week or a day that didn’t go by where I was just like, ‘You know, I wanna check out.’ I know what that feels like, I know it comes from loneliness, I know it comes from not having self-worth, not loving yourself. Cudi revealed on his Facebook page that he had checked himself into rehabilitation for depression and suicidal urges.

David Arquette

American actor, producer-director David Arquette is well known for his versatility. He is also a screen writer, fashion designer and a former wrestling champion. But after separating with Friends actress, his wife Courtney Cox in 2010, David was often seen dancing and behaving weirdly at nightclubs. He revealed that he checked himself into rehab centre to deal with depression and increased consumption of alcohol. In April 2011, Arquette acknowledged his strange behaviour, saying he had been sober for more than 100 days and was now more in touch with his emotions.
