Times when celebrities showed us style is how you wear it and not what you wear

Kirsten “Bella Swan” Stewart made quite a statement when she removed her sky-high Christian Louboutins at the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. The internet was rife with speculations over her reason for ditching the heels this time; she had walked the green lawns of the festival with the heels in her hands. The video shows that she was just trying to outrun — comfortably — the rain.

Looks like both the times Stewart chose comfort over being ‘fashionable’. Stewart is not the only one to have opted for comfort—some of the celebrities have shown that being comfortable in no way takes away their glam factor!

Barefoot Beauties

No surprises that Stewart tops our list here: She has been seen without shoes at film festivals not once, not twice, but three times—twice at Cannes!

2016 seemed to be the year of the barefoot—American sweetheart Julia Roberts, too, opted out of her heels to walk the red carpet at Cannes. This was not the first time, though. She was seen walking back with heels in her hand after 2014 Golden Globes ceremony.

Emma Thompson won over millions of hearts with her heels-in-one-hand-martini-in-the-other barefoot walk on 2014 Golden Globes stage to announce the best screenplay award.

Long before barefoot became an internet-breaking sensation, Charlie’s Angel Cameron Diaz went without shoes to red carpet. And she looked gorgeous, too, during the photoshoot of the 2003 Hollywood premiere of the film.

Sneakered suaves

When we are talking about comfort, how can we leave behind the good old, sneakers? Iron Man Robert Downey Jr made it a fashion statement (or he doesn’t own a pair of dress shoes); he is almost never seen without it—be it movie premieres, parties or chat shows. Our Indian celebrity brethren is not far behind!

Mr Sonam Kapoor, aka Anand Ahuja, wore sneakers—with a lot of panache we might say—to his wedding reception. He wore a brilliant blue designer sherwani and churidar and paired them with sneakers!

Women are also sneak-ery that way. Ahuja’s sister-in-law Rhea Kapoor, too, sported comfortable Nike sneakers to her sister’s wedding. The stylist Kapoor paired her Abu Jani-Sandip Khosla lehenga with the shoes and flashed them with all the charm of someone extremely comfortable.

And sneakers with evening gowns can be cute too. Hailee Steinfeld wore bright red sneakers to the 2011 Vanity Fair Oscar Party in West Hollywood.

Sally Field showed off her sneakers under the billowing, but beautiful red gown at the 2013 Vanity Fair Oscar Party.

High fashion flats

You don’t have to stuff your feet into tottering heels to look gorgeous—this, too, has been proven by our celebrities. They love to show off that comfort is also a style.

Gal Gadot preferred to match her sparkly red gown with retail store Aldo gold flat—and still looked stunning—to the world premiere of the world premiere of Wonder Woman in 2017.

Long before the #heelgate cast, a shadow on Cannes Film Festival—Uma Thurman rocked silver flat sandals to 2014 premiere of Pirate of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides at the French Riviera.

And our Indian beauties can be trusted to be seen wearing no heels with most of their Indian ethnic wear. Anushka Sharma looks regal in this mint green Anarkali, and she paired the beautiful formal dress with comfortable Kolhapuris.
