Akshay and Bhumi have managed to create a strong buzz around ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’. But will it live up to the hype? ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’, despite the odd title, it raises a huge issue facing India relating to women’s safety as they try to access safe toilets. The film is based on the true life story of Keshav and Jaya, whose love transcends social barriers but whose marriage is tested by something as simple as going to the toilet. It is set to be screened at the Cineworld in Ashford. It points out that of the 1.7 million people who die from living in poor sanitary conditions around the world, some 600,000 are in India. Meanwhile, more than 50% of the country’s rape cases are perpetrated against women who have to defecate in the open.

The problem has been described as an “open defecation crisis” as some women have to walk several miles to be able to access safe facilities, but the situation is being improved thanks to schemes such as the Clean India Movement.
