If you loved them in the quirky ads, this news should have you punching the air… Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt will be paired opposite each other in Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy. Last year there had been reports stating that this duo had been penciled in, before the leading man Ranveer supposedly walked out of the film citing date issues. Then there was also talk that Saif Ali Khan’s daughter Sara Ali Khan would feature in this film instead of Alia. Now, however the official line-up for Gully Boy is Alia and Ranveer. The identity of the second male lead, however, is yet to be revealed. Rumours float around that it could just be Farhan Akhtar, who will play the second rapper in the film.

For those curious, Gully Boy is inspired by real life rappers like Divine and Naezy whose work has ranged from speaking about petty crimes in their respective Mumbai neighborhoods of Kurla and Andheri, to sharing stories about finding a voice and becoming activists. Based in Mumbai, most of their work of these rap actistes/ activists is dedicated to the city.

The first song of Rapper Divine aka Vivian Fernandes was ‘Yeh mera Bombay…’, was followed by ‘Meri gully main…’ which gave an insight into Mumbai’s street life. Zoya’s film’s name appears to have been inspired by this song. The next, ‘Jungli Sher…’ could well be a title for the irrepressible leading man, Ranveer Singh!

Incidentally, this is for the second time that Ranveer and Zoya come together, after Dil Dhadakne Do. Naturally expectations are high from Gully Boy, dubbed to be an extremely ambitious project. The film will roll next year but the excitement has already begun! –Cineblitz
