In 2016, Shri Rajput Karni Sena started protest against Bollywood film ‘Padmavati‘, based on Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem ‘Padmavat’ about Rajput queen Rani Padmini, claiming that the film is distorting Rajput history and hurting Rajputana sentiments and the Queens character. There were allegations from the group that the film is depicting inaccurate facts, with activists vandalising the sets of the film.

The Karni Sena made threats of violence, reportedly threatening to burn down theatres if the film is released to audiences before it is shown to them for evaluation. Sanjay Leela Bhansali responded to the threats by reiterating that rumours of a romantic dream sequence between Rani Padmini and Sultan Khilji are false, and that the film contains no such scene. Even while filming the movie, Bhansali was attacked by members of the group. When the initial release date was fixed on December 1, Karni Sena made a huge hue and cry about the film over an alleged dream sequence that would show Allaudin Khalji and Padmavati romance. While the makers and the actors had clarified that no such sequence has been shot, but the group refused to believe it!

Karni Sena has time and again created a ruckus around ‘Padmaavat’ and finally agreed to watch the film when it will release on January 25. But, this is not the first film or TV show that the group had a problem with. Check out the list of other films and TV shows for which Karni Sena created problems:

Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s ‘Jodhaa Akbar’

Shri Rajput Karni Sena had protested when Ashutosh Gowarikar’s film ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ was released in 2008. The group had initially said that the film had undermined Rajput valour. Interestingly, they raised objections about a fact on whether Jodhaa was Akbar’s wife or daughter-in-law. The real reason for their protest was the fact that the film showed the marriage between two communities! Some theatres in Rajasthan did refuse to show the production and there were some protests in other states also.

Salman Khan’s ‘VEER’

The organisation also protested against Salman Khan’s movie ‘Veer’ which was released in 2010. The group claimed that it maligned their brave community. They even vandalised some cinemas that showed the film

Ekta Kapoor’s serial ‘Jodhaa Akbar’

In 2013, the Karni Sena opposed a TV serial that was titled and themed ‘Jodhaa Akbar’, a historical drama series which was produced by soap queen Ekta Kapoor. They also attacked the Zee office in Jaipur and vandalised it. After Zee Media filed a complaint, the leader of the group, Lokendra Singh Kalvi, was arrested!

The group also claimed that the Hindu-Muslim marriage involved is a fictional character and was a distortion of history resulting from poor research.
