The Sachin-Achrekar partnership was special, some would say lethal, a combination of a dedicated coach, hell bent on getting the best out of his players and a prodigy, ever-so-keen to learn and keep improving.
Ramakant Achrekar started playing cricket in 1943 and started playing club cricket for New Hind Sports Club in 1945. He played the one first class for all India State Bank against Hyderabad in the Moin-Ud-Dowla tournament during 1963-64. His most famous student is unarguably Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, India’s highest run scorer in both ODIs and Test and also the current record holder for ‘n’ number of records. Achrekar played an instrumental role in grooming some of the country’s most renowned cricketers like Vinod Kambli, Ajit Agarkar and Ramesh Powar.
Sachin trained under him while he was a student. When he was young, Sachin used to practice for hours and hours in the nets. If he becomes exhausted, Achrekar would put a one-rupee coin on the top of the stumps and the bowler who dismissed Tendulkar would get the coin and if Tendulkar passed the whole session without getting dismissed, then he would give the coin to him. Sachin now considers those 13 coins that he won as some of his most prized possessions.
On Wednesday evening, a special screening of Tendulkar’s biographical drama film ‘Sachin: A Billion Dreams’ was held in Mumbai. The premiere was attended by many B-town celebs including Amitabh Bachchan, Ranveer Singh, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan along with the Indian cricket team. Cricketers like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli with Anushka Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Ajinkya Rahane to name a few were present in full force at the premiere of the film. Also present was Sachin’s childhood coach Ramakant Achrekar who guided the Master Blaster during his initial days.
