From Haseena Parker to Sanjay Dutt, 15 upcoming biopics to watch out for


After action, romance, comedy, horror and crime, Bollywood is now investing and experimenting more on biographical dramas. Biopics are quite popular in Bollywood lately. Whether, it is of freedom fighters, politicians, sport stars, underworld dons, businessmen or outlaws, they in one way or the other draw inspiration for a common man like you and me. The huge success of biopics such as Sonam Kapoor’s Neerja, Sushant Singh Rajput’s MS Dhoni and Aamir Khan’s Dangal, has inspired Bollywood filmmakers to explore this genre even more and bring the real-life stories on the 70mm screen. And the latest one we heard is about the Olympic Gold medalist Abhinav Bindra. Yes! Another sports biopic is on the cards. And guess who will portray his role on screen? It’s none other than ‘Mirzya’ star Harshvardhan Kapoor. After months of speculations, the Abhinav Bindra biopic has finally got a green signal from Harshvardhan. Harshvardhan recently met Abhinav to begin prepping for the film, and shared a picture from their meeting.

It’s great to see celebrities play real life characters and give us an insight into their life. The story about their life, struggle and what all they went through to make it this big makes them an interesting subject. Bollywood actors and filmmakers are always on the lookout for more such films to prove their mettle. So here are some interesting biopics that Bollywood has in production and one you should not miss.

Haseena: The Queen of Mumbai

‘Aashiqui’ actress Shraddha Kapoor is playing the role of India’s most wanted criminal Don Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Haseena Parkar. Her transformation into the 45-year-old woman has taken everyone by surprise. For the film, Shraddha will, for the first time, share screen space with her real life brother Siddhanth Kapoor, who is portraying Dawood’s role. The film is directed by Apoorva Lakhia and will hit the screen on September 18, 2017.

Sanjay Dutt biopic

Based on ‘Munnabhai’ actor Sanjay Dutt’s life, the film starring Ranbir Kapoor is already generating a lot of buzz. After leaked pictures of Ranbir bearing an uncanny resemblance to Saju Baba, surfaced online, fans have been going crazy waiting to watch the film. The much-awaited biopic directed by Rajkumar Hirani will release in March 2018. Apart from Ranbir, the film also features Paresh Rawal, Sonam Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, Dia Mirza, Vicky Kaushal and Anushka Sharma.

Kalpana Chawla biopic

Playing Kalpana Chawla, India’s first female astronaut who travelled to the outer world, isn’t an easy job. But when the character is being played by ‘Desi Girl’ Priyanka Chopra, the audience can hope for something incredible. According to reports, Priyanka is working on the project for more than a year, but there has been no announcement about the same. Kalpana Chawla moved to USA and joined NASA after completing aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College. In February 2003, along with her fellow mates, Kalpana died when her space shuttle Columbia exploded. Her life story is quite interesting and inspiring.

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi

Kangana Ranaut’s ambitious project ‘Manikarnika’ will see her bringing Jhansi Ki Rani Laxmibai, one of the leaders of the first India’s Independence war of 1957, alive on the celluloid. The story has been written by K.V. Vijayendra Prasad, who was also the writer of blockbuster films like ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. Television actress Ankita Lokhande had been roped in for the movie and has finally started shooting for the historical biopic. She even got injured while performing an action scene. The makers are aiming for a 2018 release.

Biopic on Saadat Hasan Manto

After gathering all the praise and critical acclaims in his last film ‘Raees’, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is all set to play the role of Pakistani writer Saadat Hasan Manto, who is known for his stories on Indian partition. The film will be directed by Nandita Das and also features Rasika Dugal as Manto’s wife Safiyah Manto. Manto had his wasy with words, and Nawaz is the perfect pick for this character. Interestingly, a snap of Nawaz from the film as ‘Manto’ was shared and within no time, it went viral and as expected he looked so much like the writer himself.


Based on the life of ‘T-Series’ founder Gulshan Kumar, who changed the face of Indian music industry beginning in 1980s, this film will see khiladi Akshay Kumar playing the lead role. It will trace Gulshan’s rags-to-riches story till the time he was shot dead outside a temple in Mumbai in 1997. It will be directed by Subhash Kapoor who also directed Akshay starrer ‘Jolly LLB 2’ and release in 2018.

Biopic on Saina Nehwal

Directed by Amol Gupte, the movie will star Shraddha Kapoor as Padma Bhushan awardee badminton player Saina Nehwal, who won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Slated for a 2018 release, Shraddha has said that it is going to be her “most difficult film” till date. And now, taking to Instagram, Saina posted a picture with Shraddha, who will be portraying her on screen. While Saina can be seen in casuals, Shraddha looks all ready to get into character as she is seen sporting badminton gear. The badminton ace shared the picture and captioned it as, “Today’s badminton practice session with @shraddhakapoor #Biopic.”


Director Kabir Khan will soon take us to the walk down memory lane with his iconic upcoming movie based on historic 1983 World Cup win, when for the first time India proudly lifted the Cricket World Cup. The film depicts the incredible journey of 1983 squad who started from the bottom and later became the big starlets of the game of cricket. Ranveer Singh will be seen rocking the screen as Kapil Dev in the film who was then the captain of ’83 world cup team.

The Great Khali

Sushant Singh Rajput who won accolades for depicting Dhoni’s untold story on screen is once again have been approached to play the lead role for the biopic based on the Indian hunk and WWE Champion The Great Khali. According to reports, makers are considering Sushant to play the titular role of the wrestler. The movie will unfold the Khali’s life journey, Dalip Singh Rana, who became the star in the world of wrestling and how the 7 feet tall man touched the sky when he became The Great Khali.


Versatile actor Boman Irani will be seen playing the role of India’s Noble Laurate, Kailash Satyarthi in upcoming biopic named Jhalki. Kailash Satyarthi an Indian children’s right activist who is working against child labour from last two decades, founded Bachpan Bachao Andolan in 1980, and he has protected the rights of 83,000 children from 114 countries as per reports. In 2014, Satyarthi was honoured with Nobel Peace Prize for his tremendous hard work for providing freedom to hundreds of children all over the globe. The film is reportedly being directed by Nation award winning director, Brahmanad Singh.

Biopic on astronaut Rakesh Sharma

After ‘Dangal’, Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan is all set to star in another biopic, which will be based on India’s first astronaut Rakesh Sharma. Meanwhile, according to various media reports, it will either be titled ‘Saare Jahaan Se Achha’ or ‘Salute’. And will be co-produced by Aamir, Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur. Well-known ad filmmaker Mahesh Mathai will direct the movie. And according to reports, Fatima Sana Shaikh will be playing the role of his wife in the film.

Mathematician Anand Kumar

This untitled film stars actor Hrithik Roshan as mathematician Anand Kumar, the founder of the initiative Super 30, who selects 30 talented candidates each year from economically backward sections of society and trains them for the IIT-JEE entrance exam. The film is yet to go on the floors. The film will focus on Anand’s life and what struggles he faced to start the ‘Super 30’ coaching programme.

Biopic on PV Sindhu


After Sania Nehwal, it’s time for Rio Olympic silver medalist Pusarla Venkata Sindhu to get mention in this list. Actor Sonu Sood is working on his next production, which will be based on Sindhu’s life. Sonu expressed his desire to cast Deepika Padukone, daughter of famous former badminton player Prakash Padukone, in the lead role. Sindhu became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal in 2016.


Gone are those days when filmmakers used stick to conventional stories. R Balki and Twinkle Khanna along with Akshay Kumar are set to bring the story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, the man who wore a sanitary pad to break a taboo. Khiladi Kumar, who did not hesitate to be a part of ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’, will yet again bring a story that needs to be heard and applauded. ‘Padman’ will chronicle Muruganantham’s journey of finding a way to make cheap, affordable sanitary napkins for women in his village.

Paralympic silver medalist Deepa Malik to get her Bollywood biopic

At a time in Bollywood when stories of real heroes are winning the hearts of audiences, it now appears that the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic medal – Deepa Malik, will have her story adapted for the big screen. According to a report on Mumbai Mirror, Farhan Akhtar and filmmaker Ritesh Sidhwani will produce a biopic on the Paralympic silver medalist. The report states that Ritesh’s script-developing team chanced upon the story of Deepa, which had the filmmaker bowled over. The makers have already begun documenting her life and getting everyone on record. The makers will begin looking for the lead actress soon. The film is expected to go on floors next year.


Khiladi Kumar is on a roll. From a patriotic to a ‘Padman’, Akki is donning various hats for his films. And now, he will essay the role of hockey player Balbir Singh, who was a part of the hockey team that won India’s first gold medal as an independent nation at the Olympic Games. Titled ‘Gold’, the film will see Akshay in a yet another new avatar. And this has definitely left his fans excited.

Rahima Khan biopic

‘Piku’ duo Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan will soon be sharing space once again for a biopic on Rahima Khan or Sapna Didi, a feared Mumbai mafia queen of the 80s. According to reports in a daily, the biopic which is a joint venture between Vishal Bhardwaj and KriArj Entertainment is said to have found another partner in Bhushan Kumar of T-Series. The report also stated that the film will go on floor next week and is slated to release in October 2018.


Southern superstar Rajinikanth’s daughter, Aishwarya Rajinikanth Dhanush has announced her next directorial venture. Aishwarya will be bringing the story of Indian Paralympian high jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu, who won Gold during the Rio Paralympics 2016, to the big screen. The film will be in Tamil and will depict the struggle and ultimately the triumph who netted India the Gold at 2016 Summer Paralympic games.
