One of the most successful filmmakers in the country today, Aanand L Rai , has always backed young, fresh talent. Rai even encouraged new filmmakers like Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Mudassar Aziz and Rahul Shanklya among others, by backing their films under his home production banner.

The director, who believes that the success of a film is based on healthy collaboration, is now giving opportunities to young professionals and budding filmmakers under his home banner, Colour Yellow Productions. Rai’s team has been in talks with universities and film schools and are open to giving opportunities to talent with breakthrough ideas. Aanand has always been a forward thinker and is looking to give budding filmmakers and other film professionals a great career start-up by involving them in his upcoming films. How lovely is that!
He sets his films against the real heart of India. Meerut will most likely be the third city of Uttar Pradesh that Rai will shoot in. Remember how beautifully he had captured Kanpur in the TANU WEDS MANU franchise and Varanasi in Raanjhanaa. It is evident that Rai knows small town India inside out and will do complete justice to Meerut as well in his next.
Ever since Shah Rukh shared that cryptic tweet, “This one is most special to all of us. And the title is too sweet. Wait for it,” …we have been entranced with the idea of the wonders this duo will whip up together. Especially given that SRK is going to be playing a role that he has never played before – a dwarf, no less! Keen that the premise does not be seen as gimmicky, the filmmaker also clarified, “It (story) sounds like it is just about a dwarf but it is much more than that. It is a much taller film. It is a very entertaining and interesting love story.” Yes, and there will be romance and songs too – everybody needs love, even little people, right?
He has given Hindi cinema some of its strongest and realistic women characters, who are opinionated and not always right either, be it RAANJHANAA’S Zoya or TANU WEDS MANU’s Tanuja and her lookalike Datto. Refusing to take credit for doing the cause of women any great service, Aanand has pointed out that such films have always been made, be it MOTHER INDIA, CHALBAAZ or CHANDNI BAR.
“I think we have started believing in our audience now. We have always underestimated them. We don’t make such stories but whenever we do, they are successful. The audience want to watch a good story. You need to tell it properly.” That, of course, makes all the difference!

He’s a rare gentleman, a sensitive soul and adorably frank too. For instance, he reveals that he is emotionally dominating and can exploit people emotionally. “If I want to make people I care for, miserable, I can do that in two minutes. For instance, I love my assistants a lot and know that my silence will hurt them, so I will use my silence as a weapon for upsetting them if they do something wrong. I will not scream at them. I know it will hurt them more and it’s effective.” We like!
