Actors and filmmakers have often become synonymous with quality. Some others have been synonymous with box office magic. But rarely do you come across a team that has hit a sixer everytime they grace the pitch.
How often have we seen father and son working together? Sanjay Dutt and Sunil Dutt worked together in the film Munnabhai MBBS, where in Sunil Dutt played Sanjay’s reel life father. While the audience could easily relate to their father son chemistry, that unfortunately was the last time we saw them together in a film. Before this, the worked in several films together like, KHSATRIYA, Reshma and Rocky.
While Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor have been superstars of their respective generation, they still haven’t yet worked together in any film.
Amitabh Bachchan and his son Abhishek Bachchan have shared the screen space many times. They played father son in Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar. Again in Bunty Aur Bubli they worked together as a cop and thieves. Their most remarkable film together is Paa where in Amitabh Bachchan played Abhishek’s son.
Like these few father son combo’s is the Roshan family, where in Hrithik and Rakesh Roshan have been consistent in working with each other and they’ve made sure everytime they work together, they create magic.
Roshan senior and HR’s journey began 16 years ago, in January 2000 to be precise with Kaho Na Pyaar Hai. Not only did the film rewrite box office history, it also went on to feature in the Limca Book of Records as the film that picked up the maximum number of awards. From there on, this team has rewritten ticket sale records several times over. Whether it is Koi Mil Gaya or their Krrish franchise, they have grown from strength to strength in the last decade and a half. And now as they stand on the threshold of Kaabil, their January 25, 2017 film, there is a palpable sense of excitement in the trade.
Says Rakesh Roshan, who has produced Kaabil directed by Sanjay Gupta, “Hrithik and I work as a team because on set both of us are professionals. We are fully aware of the father-son equation at all times. But, the beauty of our combination is that when it comes to a film, we are so perceptive and aligned in our thought process, that it almost, always works for the betterment of our film. Take Kaabil for instance. Everytime there was a dilemma, I found Hrithik and I were thinking on similar lines. even our director Sanjay Gupta was in alignment with us.”
Talking of why he loves working with his son, the filmmaker adds, “Hrithik has worked as an assistant on my films before he became my lead actor. He therefore knows my cinema as well as I do. Another point I must make is that he is one of the most disciplined and talented actors I have worked with. Naturally I have now grown dependent on him for all my movies. Here again, let me tell you this is not so much a personal thing. It is also a professional thing because as I said, as father and son, we have consistently proved that our combination works as much at home as it does at the box-office.”
