Shobhaa De stirred up an Olympic-poo-sized fracas when she tweeted, “Goal of Team India at the Olympics: Rio jao. Selfies lo. Khaali haat wapas aao. What a waste of money and opportunity.”
While not stooping to abuse, several B-town denizens responded with loyalty and encouragement towards the Indian contingent. Take Amitabh Bachchan who consoled, “Never mind Bindra/hockey men’s team. You played well. We will win soon. Proud of Indian team at Rio.”
Arjun Kapoor quipped, “Everyone has an opinion about our athletes at Rio, wish everyone with an opinion had once tried to even represent their country. #IndiaAtRio” Whoa, that’s a killer of a comeback!
Gul Panag averred, “Lots of lament about medal tally, but no lament about lack of fitness culture (which builds a sporting nation).” Yes, that is sadly almost alien in our Indian culture!
Vishal Dadlani, never one to mince his words, thundered, “Indian athletes put in a lifetime of effort (dealing with near-zero facilities & petty politics) to carry our flag to the #Olympics! Not easy!”
Guess all this starry support is consolation for our sportspersons who couldn’t convert their Olympic dreams into medals at Rio…
