When asked by journalist Karan Thapar if there is “sufficient ground for seeking impeachment of CJ”, Chelameswar said, “Impeachment can’t be the answer for every question or problem. The seat became vacant after the sudden demise of Sena corporator Pralhad Thombare. 71-year-old Thombare  died due to massive heart attack in January 2018.
