After a gap of four years, India is again set to face England in Test matches. After registering victory in T20 series and defeat in ODI series against English team recently, India will now play a total of five Test matches during August and September. The first Test match will start on August 1, and Indian team will have a tough challenge on the English soil, taking in view the strength England show at their home, especially in Test matches.
Also, India do not have a great record in England in Tests. In the last Test series against England on English soil in 2014, India lost the five match series 1-3. Prior to that, when India went to face the host England in 2011, they were embarrassed 4-0.
Indian batsmen have failed to showcase their class in England, where the bowling makes conditions tough. Most of the important Indian batsmen have miserably failed here. Let’s have a closer look on the stats of such Indian players.
It is quite shocking but yes, Virat Kolhi is one of Indian batsmen who has a very poor batting record on English soil. In 5 matches that Virat has played against hosts England, he has managed to score only 134 runs. This sets him on a very low batting average of 13.40, after scoring 134 in 10 innings he played. Virat has not been even able to register a half-century in Tests on the English soil, and his highest score is just 39.
Now if we consider both home and away matches against England, Virat has scored 977 runs in 14 matches with 3 hundreds with an average of 44.40. Virat has made 843 runs against England in 9 matches that were played in India, and he has an average of 70.25. Interestingly, Virat highest score is against England, 235.
From an average of 70.25 at home to 13.40 at England, and highest score of 235 at home to 39 at English soil, the stats clearly prove that Virat has a point to prove in England.
When talking about Shikhar Dhawan’s overall performance in Tests, he has brilliant figures in batting. Having played 50 innings in 30 Tests matches in his career so far, he has scored 2153 runs with an average of 43.90. However, these figures miraculously drop when we take his batting against England into consideration. Shikhar has played only 3 Test matches against England team, all of which were played at England, and he has failed in his batting in those matches.
Shikhar, who has smashed 7 hundreds and 5 fifties in his Test career, have not even crossed 40 runs in any match against England. His highest score at England is just 37 runs, and he has a total batting average of 20.33. He has scored only 122 runs in 6 innings he played in England. On current tour, he fell for ducks in both innings in the practice game against Essex.
Cheteshwar Pujara, the permanent member of Indian squad in Tests, at present, also has very poor figures when we compare his batting performance against England at home and away. In overall Test matches, Pujara has astonishing figures of 4531 runs with an average of 50.34. He has hit 14 hundreds and 17 half-centuries with 206* being his highest score.
When take a glance at his overall performance against England, he has brilliant numbers, with 1061 runs in 14 matches at an average of 46.13. He has scored four hundreds and two fifties against England. Also, his highest score of 206* in Test also came against England. However, these figures drops when we take into account his performance against England in English soil. He has managed only 222 runs in 10 innings he played during 5 Test matches at an average of 22.20. Moreover, he has only hit 1 half-century and his highest score is 55.
When we talk about Ravindra Jadeja’s performance in Tests, we need to look at both his batting and bowling, as he is one of the crucial all-rounders who is part of Indian squad. Jadeja has played a total of 10 Test matches against England, out of which he played 6 in India and 4 on English soil. In six matches in India, he has scored 236 runs at an average of 33.71, with 90 being his highest score.
On English soil, he has played 4 matches in which he made 177 runs at an average of 22.12, with 68 being the highest score. There is less difference between his batting performance in home and away matches. But in bowling zone, there is a drastic difference. In 6 matches at home, he has bagged whopping 29 wickets, however, he has managed to get only 9 wickets in 4 matches in England. So, if we talk about Jadeja’s overall performance against England, he has failed to spread the colours of his magic on English soil.
So we can clearly see that the above Indian players do not have that magical touch in their performances when they play on English soil. The drastic difference between their stats in home and away matches against England clearly shows the hardships they face while playing at England. However, fortunately this is not the case with some other Indian batsmen. There are some other players who manage to keep their performance graph high even when they face England team on their home. Let’s have a quick look on some of such Indian players.
Murali Vijay is one such player who has performed equally well against England in home and away matches. He has played 5 matches against England in India and equal number of matches in English land. In India, he has a batting average of 44.62 with 357 runs while in England, he has a batting average of 40.20 with 402 runs. This is very close to his overall batting average of 42.16. His highest scores scale to 136 and 146 at home and away respectively.
The stats in Ajinkya Rahane case are quite opposite. He has performed better in England than at home. In a total of 8 matches against England, he has scored 63 runs in 3 matches played in India, while he has scored 299 runs in 5 matches in England. He has also hit a century at England. So, Rahane is one such player who does not fumble while batting in England, thanks to his great technique.
Although R Ashwin is mainly a bowler, he is counted as an all-rounder now owing to the four centuries he has hit in his Tests career so far. R Ashwin has decent figures against England in Tests and he has played just 2 matches at English soil. Still, he scored 106 runs in those two matches with a highest of 46 not out. Interestingly, Ashwin’s batting average of 35.33 in England is better than that of Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan and Pujara.
Dinesh Karthik has played only 3 matches against England, all of them at English soil, and his impeccable performance surely owns him a mention here. With a highest score of 91, he has scored 263 in 3 matches with average of 43.83. These figures are amazing and the upcoming series will give him more chances to continue with his impressive batting skills against England on their soil.
