De Villiers dethrones Steve Smith as world’s best Test batsman

AB De Villiers

Johannesburg: South African swashbuckling batsman AB de Villiers has replaced Australia’s Steve Smith as the ICC’s world number one Test batsman after the latter’s unimpressive performance during the first Ashes Test against England in Cardiff.

Smith, who had ascended to the numero uno spot last month, saw himself drop one place to second in the latest ICC’s Test rankings after he was dismissed cheaply for 33 in both innings during Australia’s crushing 169-run defeat against England with one day to spare on Saturday, Sport24 reported.

Meanwhile, England’s Joe Root has climbed to a career-best fourth following his stellar performance in Cardiff as he scored 134 and 60 in the first and second innings respectively.
