New Delhi : The inter-ministerial panel set up to suggest ways to improve the financial health of the telecom sector will submit its report by the end of this month, Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha told reporters on Monday

The panel, which has top officials from the departments of telecommunications, financial services, and economic affairs, had met representatives of telecom operators and banks last month, reports Cogencis. “IMG (inter-ministerial group) will submit its report. Our ministry will deliberate on it. Then through Telecom Commission, it will come to me,” Sinha said.

The report will be crucial for the sector, which is reeling under stress after the entry of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. The minister also said that the government was working to bring out a new telecom policy by March 2018. “We are trying that when the New Year starts, it starts with a new policy.” The government had last brought out a policy on the telecom sector in 2012. The 2012 policy had taken key steps such as  mobile number portability, liberalisation of spectrum etc.
