BHOPAL: The Central Zone bench of National Green Tribunal (NGT) in Bhopal on Thursday has asked Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) to submit a report comprising details about the drainage system in the city and the preventive measures taken by it to prevent water logging during heavy rains.

The petitioner and the counsel of the case, Sudeshwar Rao Waghmare had filed the petition against commissioner and BMC last year in September seeking details about the city’s drainage system citing the incident of heavy water logging during incessant rains in the city in July which claimed several lives. Filing the petition, Waghmare said there had been rampant encroachment over the drainage system in many parts of the city due to which during heavy rains the water could not be drained out resulting in water logging. On Thursday during the hearing, NGT sought a reply from BMC comprising details about the drainage system and the preventive measures taken by it to prevent water logging in future.

“Last year there was incessant rainfall in the city and due to poor drainage and sewage system water flowed into houses and inundated roads. Seven precious lives were lost, which could have been saved if there had been a proper drainage system. The court has asked BMC to submit reply in next hearing on April 27,” said petitioner and advocate Waghmare.
