Terrorist Mannan Wani, one of the top men of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) in Kashmir Valley, who was killed in an encounter with security forces in Kupwara, had won prize and was felicitated at an international conference held at AISECT University now known as RNTU (Ravindra Nath Tagore University) in Bhopal on March 15-March 16, 2016.

Intelligence had confirmed that Mannan came Bhopal to attend International conference of AISECT University in 2016. Once a research scholar of Applied Geology at Aligarh Muslim University, Mannan Wani had joined the HM. He had gone missing from the University and a few days later, his photograph, holding what appeared to be a AK assault rifle, appeared on social media. His decision to join the terror group had shocked his friends.

A post on social media mentioned how he had expected Wani to make it to civil services, another post referred to a paper that had won him the first prize at an international conference in Bhopal in 2016. Even after joining HM, Mannan Wani was writing articles on social media justifying his decision why he chose gun over pen. Kashmir Valley had witnessed violence for six months in 2016 following the killing of Burhan Wani, one of the known faces of HM on account of his penchant for uploading photos on Facebook.
