BHOPAL : The state Congress, which is aspiring to replace the BJP as ruling party in the next assembly elections, needs to first put its own house in order. The events unfolded during and after a programme organised on the Narmada Bhawan premises here on Saturday clearly revealed it.

The function was christened “Rajiv Ke Sipahi”. However, the PCC president Arun Yadav and leaders close to him kept away from the programme, which was a gathering of pro-Digvijay Singh leaders of the party. Those who attended included Leader of Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha Ajay Singh.

Sources said that permission was sought for holding the programme at PCC offices. However, it was turned down. And that was why the venue of the programme, which was organised to commemorate Rajiv Gandhi, was shifted to nearby Narmada Bhavan, a private building.

Congress state organsiational general secretary Chandrika Dwivedi later said that the programme was not organised by the PCC and that the party had no knowledge of it. Ajay Singh countered by saying that it was not mandatory to inform the PCC of every programme and event.

Digvijay Singh’s younger brother Laxman Singh and Diggi acolyte Mahendra Singh Chouhan – both of whom were thrown out of the party after Yadav taking over as president, were also present at the function.

‘I’m writing thesis on Shivraj, will be awarded PhD by Rahul in 2018’

Addressing the function, Ajay Singh said that since 2011 he is working on a PhD thesis on Shivraj Singh Chouhan. “If the thesis is completed by 2018, Rahul Gandhi will give me the degree”, he said. It was clear that Singh was staking his claim for chief ministership in case the Congress forms its government in the state in 2018. He said that he had driven the car for Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi and now wants to do the same for Sonia and Rahul. He said that Modi will have to take 60 births to do the work the Congress had done in 60 years. He also appealed to the youth to campaign against Modi and Shivraj Singh on the social media.
