Bhopal: Minister got Rs 10cr purchases made from friend’s firm

BHOPAL: Alleging that Surya Prakash Meena, minister of state (Independent charge) horticulture and food processing, throwing all norms to the winds, had got a purchase order worth Rs 10 crore issued by the MP Agro Industries Corporation Ltd to his businessman friend Sanjay Parsai, who owns a company called Narmada Marketing, ‘Vichar Madhya Pradesh’, an NGO has demanded his sacking.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, office-bearers of the organisation said department’s principal secretary Ashok Varnwal had clearly stated in a letter dated August 2, 2016 that the department will make no purchases from Agro Industries Corporation or any other agency. Further, the minister had told Vidhan Sabha on December 8, 2016 that exempting the departmental schemes from DBT would not be in the interest of farmers.

However, despite all this, in January 2017, it was decided that the department will buy seeds and other goods for supplying to the farmers through Agro Industries Corporation and on March 1, Agro Industries Corporation issued a purchase order to M/s Narmada Marketing. This was violative of the Centre’s DBT norms and of the department’s own decisions.

They claimed Parsai, owner of the company, had shared dais with the minister at a public function in Sehore district on February 2. The organisation said the CM should sack Meena.
