Unhel: Five people– children and two women–were killed and 12 others injured when a speeding car ran over them after hitting a Magic van on Ujjain-Unhel Road, the police said on Sunday. The car driver managed to escape from the scene leaving the vehicle behind.

The Madhya Pradesh government has announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the family of deceased and Rs 50,000 to every injured, said a district administration official.

Talking to Free Press, Unhel police station in-charge MR Omde said, “Five people were crushed to death by the car near Malikhedi village on Ujjain-Unhel Road at around midnight on Saturday.” The mishap occurred about five kilometres from Unhel block in Nagda tehsil of Ujjain district, he added. Stating that the car belonged to a resident of Ichhawar in Dewas district, the in-charge said that the owner has been identified and will soon be arrested.

Omde said, “There were 20 villagers in the van when the accident occurred. All 12 injured passengers were admitted to Ujjain District Hospital. Doctors attending to them have described their condition as stable.”

According to reports, the villagers had gone to attend annual fair at Unhel. They hired a Magic van to return to their native Palikhedi village. On the route, the van’s tyre got punctured. The passengers got down from the vehicle and were waiting on the roadside  for the tyre to be replaced when the speeding car crushed them, he said.

The police station in-charge said that the car driver managed to escape from scene under the cover of darkness leaving the vehicle behind. He said

The deceased were identified as Mona Bai (22), Indira Bai (23), Varsha (3), Mahesh (1) and Dilip (8).
