Yamaha Ray scooter discontinued to make way for Ray-ZR and Fascino

Yamaha Fascino was launched in India last year while Ray-ZR is expected to be launched later this year.

Launched back in 2012, Yamaha Ray was the first female specific scooter which was launched by the company in India. Now, it has been discontinued to make way for the new Cygnus Ray-ZR which was unveiled at the 2016 Auto Expo.

New Ray-ZR is a more sporty looking variant with updated design and body graphics. It gets the same 113cc single cylinder Blue Core engine from Yamaha with CVT gearbox. Power output of this engine is rated at 7.1 PS while torque output is at 8.1 Nm.

Apart from Yamaha Ray-ZR, the other reason for discontinuing old Ray is its declining sales. The idea of launching a female specific scooter probably did not click with the buyers. In addition to this, it also sent away male buyers. Yamaha India launched Ray-Z, as a male specific scooter, and it has done well in the market.

Another reason for its discontinuation is the new Yamaha Fascino, which has also managed to make space for itself in the scooter segment. Powered by the same 113 cc engine, the Fascino has already managed to feature in the top 10 scooter sales list. Yamaha unveiled a special edition of Fascino at the 2016 Auto Expo earlier this month which will be launched at a later date.
